Het Vlock Casteel @ Riebeek Kasteel
Location: Riebeek Kasteel
In early 2000, when her children were in High School, Ansie Vlok started to put her degree in Food Science to good use to develop products using the fresh produce from the farm. From producing everything in her home kitchen, the business has grown to the point that in 2006 the present shop, ‘Die Winkel’ and kitchen were opened and Ansie hit full production capacity. All the products sold in the shop are produced on-site and 95% of these were made from products grown on the farm itself.
In 2005 Het Vlock Casteel began to produce a range of their own wines (Merlot, Shiraz and a Cabernet Sauvignon). These wines has a character of their own and with subtle plays of vanilla, berries and oak, it was no surprise that they soon started to win a number of awards. In 2006, following on the success, a Sauvignon Blanc was added. These wines are delicious and a highly recommended purchase In the valley.
On the farm they grow three cultivars of table olives, two black variants, Calamata and Mission and one green variant, Nocellara. It is important that olives are planted in sandy soil which drains easily as this provides the best growing environment.
Het Vlock Casteel was one of the first South African producers to release single varietal olive oils such as Mission, Frantoio, Leccino and Coratina. Each displays unique characteristics with regard to flavour, fruitiness and intensity.
Released in future under the Het Vlock Casteel label, alongside their flagship olive oil blend of Frantoio, Leccino and Coratina which combines all of these characteristics in one unique oil. Lemon infused olive oil is also made.
