Eben is by no means a stranger to awards of this nature. Earlier this year, he also received recognition from the Institute of Masters of Wine in collaboration with The Drinks Business, who named him Winemaker's Winemaker for 2017. This honour is bestowed upon winemakers for their outstanding achievements in their field. Recent recipients of this sought-after award include Peter Sisseck, Paul Draper en Anne-Claude Leflaive.
Zakkie Bester, former Riebeek Cellar master and the 2016 recipient of this award, believes Eben is a worthy recipient of the award. "He did a lot to focus the world's attention on the Swartland with his top-quality wines. He is also one of the founding members of the Swartland Independent Producers (SIP), which enjoys a lot of media coverage, and was instrumental in the group's decision to join the region's wine- and olive route."
David Sadie, owner and winemaker at the helm of David & Nadia, agrees. "Eben is not scared to get his hands dirty and get involved. He has done so much for the region and has achieved a lot in the area. I believe that he will only build on this in future."
Eben received the award on 5 December during a gathering of wine- and olive route role-players in the Swartland.
